Are you thinking about returning to work after you retire? If your answer is yes, you are not alone. According to "T. Rowe Price’s latest annual ‘Retirement Savings and Spending Study’ found that about 20 percent of retirees are working either part- or full-time. In May 2024, Indeed Flex surveyed 1,000 adults between the ages of 62 and 85. One out of every 5 respondents reported they had returned to work due to rising expenses." Other retirees are returning to work because they want "to offset inflation, increase their social interactions and find a new passion and purpose". If you are returning to work, part-time or full-time, here are 6 ways to stay competitive in the job market based on a recent article by the Society for Human Resource Managementt (SHRM):

  1. Emphase your ability to learn. Demonstrate how you stay current in your desired field by pursuing industry certifications and completing online courses.

  2. Highlight your technical skills. "Emphasize your successful adoption of new tools or systems throughout your career." If you need additional training, take advantage of free online courses.

  3. Showcase Your Power Skills. Give examples of how you used power skills such as leadership, problem-solving and communication skills to successfully perform your past roles.

  4. Network strategically. Reach out to "previous professional contacts for leads on new opportunities and endorsements".

  5. Showcase your experience as an asset. Show how "your experience enables you to navigate complex challenges and mentor others".

  6. Demonstrate your flexibility. Show how you are easily able to adapt to working at home or hybrid, collaborating with other teams and how you tackle diverse and multiple projects.

Some of the highlighted points were slightly changed and summaried in this article. But if you want to see SHRM's advice word for word, click on the "Resources" link below. This advice is very helpful.
