Medigap Plan Series: Plan C benefits! Plan C benefits are only for a select few…

Updated: Dec 13, 2023

You have a choice to purchase any Medigap Plan you want. Well, that is correct for most of the Plans, but not for Plan C benefits. Plan C benefits are only available for people who are not new to Medicare. You see, "since January 1, 2020, Medigap plans sold to people new to Medicare aren't allowed to cover the Part B Deductible". Therefore, Plans C and F Plans [we will highlight Plan F in another post] are no longer available to people new to Medicare on or after January 1, 2020".

If you remember from our previous post about Plan A, all Medigap insurance carriers must offer Plan A. In addition,"the carriers can offer Plan C or Plan F to individuals who aren't new to Medicare and either Plan D or Plan G to individuals who are new to Medicare" (we will highlight Plans D and G as well in another post). Let's review Medigap Plan C benefits.

Medigap Plan C benefits:

  • 100%. Medicare Part A coinsurance and hospital costs (up to an additional 365 days after Medicare benefits are used)

  • 100%. Medicare Part B coinsurance or copayment

  • 100%. Blood (first 3 pints)

  • 100%. Part A hospice care coinsurance or copayment

  • 100%. Skilled nursing facility care coinsurance

  • 100%. Part A deductible

  • 100%. Part B deductible

  • 0%. Part B excess charge

  • 80%. Foreign travel emergency (up to plan limits)

The benefits are too good to be true, right? The good news is, if you already have this plan (or Plan F) you are able to keep it. If you were eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020, but not yet enrolled, you may be able to buy Plan C (or F). But if you are new to Medicare, and you enrolled after January 1, 2020, this plan is no longer available to you.

How many people are enrolled in Medigap Plan C?

Based on the data provided by AHIP (formerly called American Health Insurance Plans), in December 2021, there were 14,592,068 participants enrolled in Medigap Plans; 478,702 were enrolled in Plan C. In the State of Maryland, there were 9,051 people enrolled in Plan C. In the State of North Carolina, there were 6,493 people enrolled in Plan C.
